Newswise — Babson College and Instituto de Empresa (Madrid) have signed a strategic alliance to jointly develop teaching, research, and training programs in the fields of entrepreneurship and family enterprising. This collaboration is the result of a shared interest to promote teaching and research activities in these areas, and to develop a greater understanding of the entrepreneurial needs of family-run businesses.

The alliance's first activities, carried out by Babson College's Arthur M. Blank Center for Entrepreneurship and IE's Entrepreneurship Department, comprise joint participation in elective courses on Family Venturing; a line of research based on the nexus of family businesses and entrepreneurship; and a co-sponsored conference forum on "Transgenerational Entrepreneurship and Wealth Creation" . This strategic alliance also plans to develop programs surrounding Corporate Venturing themes and skills development while creating a learning environment that permits the exchange of experiences and concerns among participating students and faculty members of both institutions.

The two elective courses on Family Venturing and Family Venture Consulting will include developing a series of practice cases which examine family firms that have engaged in entrepreneurial growth activities in Europe, the U.S., and Latin America.

Babson and IE are co-sponsoring a research forum dedicated to family businesses and the creation of transgenerational entrepreneurship as part of the Babson Kaufman Entrepreneurship Research Conference to take place in 2005 at Babson College and later in 2007 at IE. "This alliance brings together two great institutions committed to not only teaching and researching entrepreneurship but also to being entrepreneurial. Family 'enterprising' is the value creating activity of family business. Babson's relationship with Instituto de Empresa will help individuals, families, organizations, and even societies unleash those value creating talents" , said Stephen Spinelli Jr., Vice Provost for Entrepreneurship at Babson College.

Santiago Iñiguez, Dean of IE stated that "this initiative fosters an entrepreneurial style of management in business organizations, and we consider it an honor to form an alliance with one of the leading schools in America in the field of entrepreneurship. I have no doubt that we have found the best partner with whom to develop and promote an area that IE has always seen as a fundamental motor for growth, and for the generation of collective wealth, employment and social well-being."

A key objective of the programs is to offer an integrated vision of how families can continue their entrepreneurial legacy for social and economic wealth creation. This allows participants to gain a deeper understanding of the competitive advantages and potential of this type of business, and to see family firms and large family groups as platforms for new business opportunities and entrepreneurship across generations.
