Cell bio society offers members discount on lab leadership training

Newswise — Laboratory leadership skills aren’t always second nature to new investigators. To help them become effective and productive PIs and group leaders, the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) and the Stowers Institute for Medical Research in Kansas City, Missouri have partnered to offer a discount on the intensive laboratory leadership courses created by the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO). ASCB members receive $200 off the registration fee for the courses offered April 14-17 or September 28-October 1 at Stowers.

This four-day course covers topics such as your role as a group leader, giving feedback and criticism, motivating your team, managing conflict, running meetings, interviewing and hiring, and much more.  Attendees will have opportunities to evaluate their leadership style, improve their interpersonal communications skills, and have their questions answered during these full-day sessions.  Breakfast, lunch, and dinner plus coffee breaks are included in the course fee. Accommodations at a group rate are separate.

EMBO explains why they offers this (and many other courses) on their website:

“We run these courses for two reasons: the first is to make a positive change in the leadership and management of science to improve the quality and quantity of research output and the performance and well-being of staff and teams, which is important to EMBO Solutions GmbH's mission to support and promote science; the second is to enable EMBO Solutions GmbH to provide financial resources for other programmes and activities that support scientists and their work; in other words, the money 'stays in science' to a large degree.”
