Reporters, Editors, Producers Covering Engineering Stories Urged to Apply
Newswise — Reston, Va.—From traffic congestion to safe drinking water, insightful reporting helps citizens stay informed about the infrastructure debate that shapes their communities. In recent years there has been increasing interest in the country’s infrastructure and its impact on Americans’ daily lives, especially surrounding the numerous natural disasters that have occurred.
To highlight exceptional reporting, the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) Excellence in Journalism Award honors news coverage that enhances the public’s understanding of civil engineering in designing solutions for the nation’s infrastructure.
For more than 15 years, ASCE has honored journalists for outstanding news coverage that has enhanced the public’s understanding of the role and impact of civil engineers and civil engineering in designing solutions for clean water, transportation, the environment and other public works projects. The Excellence in Journalism Award is given to a journalist(s) or producer(s) from an English-language, general interest regional or national newspaper, radio or television station, magazine (non-trade) or electronic or Web-based news outlet.
The Excellence in Journalism Award winner will receive a $3,000 honorarium, to be presented at ASCE’s Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) Awards Gala in Washington, D.C., on March 22, 2012. Past award winners have included journalists such as John Murphy-Teixidor of CNN Money, documentary producer Henry Schipper, Veronica Castelo and Jenna Hiller from News 8 Austin, Larry Van Dyne of the Washingtonian, Rob Carson of The News Tribune and Stuart Leavenworth of The Sacramento Bee.
Eligible award submissions must have been published or aired between Nov. 1, 2010, and Aug. 31, 2011. Single stories, series or special sections/productions are eligible. Entries are due Sept. 15, 2011, and may be scanned and e-mailed to [email protected]. For large digital audio or video files, e-mail a copy of the completed entry form to [email protected]—instructions will then be sent on how to upload the file to ASCE’s FTP server. Entries may also be mailed, but must be postmarked by Sept. 15, 2011.
