(February 13, 2014) — The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) will hold its 82nd Annual Scientific Meeting from April 5-9, 2014, at The Moscone Center in San Francisco. Among those scheduled to speak at the 2nd annual Opening Ceremonies program are author and Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen, former U.S. Secretary of Defense and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director Robert Gates, and Princeton University foreign policy professor emerita and CEO of the New America Foundation Anne-Marie Slaughter.
During the Plenary Session II, taking place on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, Clayton Christensen — who is a renowned business expert and New York Times best-selling author — will address attendees as the Cushing Orator. Named as the most influential business thinker in the world in 2011, Christensen’s ideas and research have been used by a wide variety of companies and industries throughout the world. After receiving his B.A. in economics, summa cum laude, from Brigham Young University and an M.Phil. in applied econometrics from Oxford University, Christensen then received an MBA from the Harvard Business school, where he now teaches one of the most popular elective classes, “Building and Sustaining a Successful Enterprise.” As a best-selling author of nine books and over one hundred articles, Christensen has been the recipient of several awards. His first book, “The Innovators Dilemma,” received the Global Business Book Award of the year in 1997, and in 2011, The Economist named it one of the six most significant books about business ever written.
In addition to Christensen, former U.S. Secretary of Defense and CIA Director Robert Gates is presenting during Plenary Session II on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, and will deliver the Hunt-Wilson Lecture. Gates served as the 22nd U.S. Secretary of Defense from 2006-2011, and is the only U.S. Defense Secretary in history to be asked to remain in that office by a newly elected President. Gates was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom — America’s highest civilian honor — by President Barack Obama, the eighth president he served under during his intelligence career. In addition to his 27-year career as an intelligence professional, Gates has authored two memoirs — “Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War,” an account of his experience serving Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; and “From the Shadows: The Ultimate Insider’s Story of Five Presidents and How They Won the Cold War,” which details his career as a CIA officer.
On Wednesday, April 9, 2014, Anne-Marie Slaughter, president and CEO of the New American Foundation (a public policy institute), will present the Louise Eisenhardt Lecture during Plenary Session III. Slaughter is the Bert G. Kerstetter ’66 University Professor Emerita of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University. From 2009-2011, she served as Director of Policy Planning for the U.S. Department of State, the first woman to hold that role. Upon leaving her position at the State Department, she received the Secretary’s Distinguished Service Award for her work leading the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review. Prior to her career in government, Slaughter was the dean of Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs from 2002-2009. As an author and editor of six books and more than 100 scholarly articles covering topics from geopolitics to gender equality, Anne-Marie Slaughter was named as one of Foreign Policy magazine’s Top 100 Global Thinkers four years in a row.
Building on the success of last year’s AANS Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans, the 2014 rendition of AANS’ Opening Ceremonies program, which is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on April 6, 2014, will include an address from special lecturer Jaron Lanier, a musician, computer scientist and the author of the recent novel “Who Owns the Future?” Lanier, who Time Magazine named one of the world’s most influential people in 2010, is known for his work with virtual-reality technology, and has created applications for medicine, design and various other industries.
