Newswise — WASHINGTON, D.C. - The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS) will expand its degree offerings with a PhD and Master of Science (MS) in epidemiology under the management of SPHHS. In 1995, SPHHS launched the degrees as joint programs with the GW Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (CCAS). The decision was recently made to officially house the PhD and MS programs in epidemiology in the SPHHS. The programs will offer a comprehensive mix of epidemiology methods, public health and statistics courses.

“I am very excited about SPHHS now granting these degrees,” says Dante Verme, PhD, professor of epidemiology and biostatistics and vice chair for educational activities. “This is a great opportunity for continued growth, expansion and development of our curriculum.”

The SPHHS PhD and MS students will continue to have access to the faculty in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics with expertise in a series of epidemiologic specialty areas as well as access to research faculty at the University’s Biostatistics Center, with expertise in clinical trials design and evaluation.

Sean D. Cleary, PhD, MPH, associate professor of epi/bio and program director for the MS and PhD in epidemiology says, “Now that SPHHS is offering a PhD in epidemiology, we can more effectively compete for the top students who would otherwise end up at other schools. Our goal is to train and graduate the best thinkers in this field”

Funding PhD students is another component of being competitive in the marketplace. The program has a goal of increasing the number of doctoral students that receive full or partial support to pursue their degree.

The PhD program will be accepting students once per year with an application deadline of December 1. It takes on average five years to complete the doctoral degree program and the curriculum has been designed to accommodate full-time and part-time students.
