Newswise — More than 2,000 people came out June 8 to raise $192,000 for Loyola during the Health, Hope & Heroes 5K Run/Walk. Proceeds from the race will support clinical care and research for the Ronald McDonald® Children’s Hospital at Loyola University Medical Center.

This event was a fun opportunity for patients, their families, Loyola staff and the community to help other children who are suffering from illness and injury,” said Jackie Lowe, director of individual giving for Loyola University Health System and race director for the 5K. “This race continues to grow every year. We were thrilled to see more people turn out to support Loyola than ever before."

Groups of participants formed teams to run together and help raise funds. One of the largest, Team Owen, included approximately 300 people who raised more than $30,000. In 2013, Owen had been airlifted to Loyola after an accident where he lost a portion of his right foot and had to have his left leg reconstructed. Thanks to the care he received at Loyola, Owen is now walking, running and playing again just like other kids his age. This race gave his family and friends an opportunity to give back to the doctors, nurses and chaplains who cared for Owen.

After the 5K, dozens of children were able to compete in foot races with some of the area's favorite mascots, including Staley of the Chicago Bears, Southpaw of the Chicago White Sox, Sky Guy of the Chicago Sky and Ronald McDonald. An after-race party included music by Chef Dan & the Appetizers, face painting and food.

Last year’s winner, 36-year-old Lars Juhl of Chicago, won the race again this year, pushing a jogging stroller the entire way to a time of 16 minutes and 45 seconds.

The top male finishers were:

1. Lars Juhl: 16:45

2. Aaron Silver: 17:28

3. Sidney Gutierrez: 18:28

The top female finishers were:

1. Stephanie Kliethermes: 20:19

2. Meg McDonald: 21:12

3. Jackie Cichon: 21:30
