Newswise — Cal State LA has received a national award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine for its success in fostering diversity and inclusion in the University's School of Nursing.
The INSIGHT's 2016 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award recognizes U.S. medical, dental, pharmacy, osteopathic, nursing and allied health schools that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.
“Our nursing program is ranked among the best in the nation,” said Cal State LA President William A. Covino. “This award demonstrates that excellence and diversity go hand in hand.”
The School of Nursing received the award based on its commitment to diversity and inclusion among faculty and staff, as well as students within the nursing programs. As a recipient of the Health Professions HEED Award, Cal State LA will be featured in the magazine’s December, 2016 issue.
“The School of Nursing’s faculty, staff, and students proudly mirror the diverse communities we serve,” said Gail Washington, director of Cal State LA’s School of Nursing.
The School of Nursing is in the Rongxiang Xu College of Health and Human Services at Cal State LA. It is home to 500 undergraduate nursing students, 175 graduate students and 10 tenure-track faculty members.
Cal State LA’s nursing master’s degree program is ranked one of the best in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report 2017 “Best Grad Schools” and is one of only two public universities in Southern California, and the only CSU campus, listed in the top 100.
The graduate program offers an option in nursing education, and nurse-practitioner options in primary and acute adult, family and psychiatric/mental health. Post master’s certificates are also offered in each nurse practitioner option. Cal State LA launched its joint Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) pilot program in fall 2013.
Programs in the School of Nursing are approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing and received accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine is the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT, said the selection process for the award is comprehensive and rigorous, including questions relating to recruitment, retention and continued leadership support for diversity. This year, 31 schools received the award.
"We take a holistic approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient,” Pearlstein said. “Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being accomplished every day across their campus.”
