Newswise — FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE Fla. — Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (NSU-COM) Florida Coastal Geriatric Resources, Education, and Training Center (GREAT GEC) will host the 6th Annual Interprofessional Geriatrics Training Institute on Feb. 15 and 16.

Held at NSU-COM’s Lifelong Learning Institute classroom located at University Park Plaza at NSU’s main Davie campus, 3420 S. University Drive, the training institute will offer a high-quality scientific program of invited speakers, a busy exhibition, and poster presentations.

Between 100 to 200 attendees, many of whom will be key international opinion leaders in the field, are expected to attend. Experts from the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Lithuania and Hungary are invited speakers.

This training institute is designed to present topics in geriatrics and eldercare important in long-term or community settings for individuals, with a special focus on inter-professional practice. It reinforces working amongst other professions and strategizing ways to improve and coordinate care. Elders present multi-faceted challenges to the health care system; they have a spectrum of medical, functional and psychosocial problems that involve complex medical and community-based care and coordination.

Geriatricians and other geriatric care workers have always advocated addressing the whole patient and not just the illness. Addressing the whole patient demands a need for many disciplines. One of the challenges is better coordination of care between the professionals. Better coordinated care will further lead to decreased hospitalizations and re-hospitalizations as well as maintenance of functioning elders in the community. In addition, longevity can be increased and the overall quality of life as one ages.

The training institute is opened to the public and free for NSU students. For registration information, please call Connie Sokolowski at 954-262-1638. NSU faculty, geriatric professionals, and the general public should contact Sokolowski for registration and rates. The NSU-COM Geriatric Education Center is one of 43 federally funded education centers of the Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA).For more information, please visit: http://www.nova.edu/gec/igs13/invitation.html
