New GDP number in China, same old concerns about accuracy
Jeremy Wallace, associate professor of government and faculty member of Cornell University’s China and Asia Pacific Studies Program, says China’s recent GDP figure casts doubts on the accuracy of the country’s statistics.
Wallace’s current book project, Seeking Truth and Hiding Facts: Information, Ideology, and Authoritarian Rule in China, looks at the use, accuracy, and political significance of official numbers in China.

Wallace says:
“Reporting the exact same growth rate, 6.7 percent, for the third quarter in a row does nothing to quell concerns about the accuracy and quality of Chinese economic statistics.
“What is even more concerning is the massive amount of state investment – 20 percent more than last year – that was needed to arrive at this number.”
