Newswise — NEW YORK – October 3, 2012 – NYU Langone Medical Center is pleased to announce the 2012 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Visiting Lectureship Program on October 3, 2012. The program will begin with opening remarks by Thomas Farley, MD, MPH Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The program will also host guest speaker, Jonathan Winickoff, MD, MPH, FAAP from the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Winickoff is a practicing pediatrician, a member of the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Child and Adolescent Health Policy, and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Winickoff has made significant contributions to reducing children's exposure to secondhand smoke through the development of the Clinical and Community Effort against Secondhand Smoke Exposure (CEASE) program.
Nationally, an estimated 53.6% of young children (aged 3–11 years) are exposed to secondhand smoke daily. Children exposed to secondhand smoke experience more frequent and severe cases of ear infections, respiratory infections and asthma attacks. The roles of childcare providers are key to educating parents on the effects of secondhand smoke and preventing further exposure.
The Visiting Lectureship Program will begin at 8:00 AM with opening remarks by Dr. Farley. The program will also hold workshops, lectures and panel discussions from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It will be located at the NYU Langone Medical Center Faculty Dining Room – Smilow Lower Lobby, 550 1st Avenue, New York, NY 10016.

The Manhattan Tobacco Cessation Program (MTCP) is a grant-funded program through the New York State Department of Health Tobacco Control Program. Housed at NYU Langone Medical Center, Department of Population Health, MTCP assists partnering health care organizations to develop and implement tailored systems that prompt clinicians to routinely ask every patient about tobacco use, advise smokers to quit, and assist smokers in their quit attempt through referral resources, and pharmacotherapy.
