Thomas Hirschl, professor of development sociology and co-author of the soon-to-be-released book, “Chasing the American Dream: Understanding What Shapes Our Fortunes,” reacts to President Obama’s State of the Union Address, noting that the larger problem of income inequality will blunt his initiatives to help the middle class.

He says:

“President Obama gave a great performance last night and displayed compassion for the plight of the American middle class.

“However his program will not re-build the middle class, nor reverse the 40-year inequality trends. These dangerous trends will continue in spite of his program, and will push the country closer to economic collapse and depression.”
