"The effects of sequestration on research are devastating, especially as each day continues with no congressional compromise in sight. Funding for new NIH grants is now on hold, together with decreased funding for continuing grants. When research funding diminishes, our ability to train the next generation of scientists and physicians is profoundly compromised -- and we may lose an entire generation of researchers to sequestration because science will no longer be considered a field where innovation is rewarded and opportunities exist. As demand for research supplies dwindles, the manufacturing side of the equation is dramatically reduced. Most noteworthy is the effect sequestration will have on the pipeline for new products -- for healthcare, engineering, and daily living. Academic-commercial partnerships will surely feel the effects."
