Newswise — MAYWOOD – Elizabeth Mueller, MD, MS, has been named a 2014 Christina Manthos Mentoring Award recipient by the Society of Women in Urology (SWIU). Dr. Mueller is the division director and the fellowship program director of Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery at Loyola University Health System. She also is an associate professor at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.
SWIU established the Christina Manthos Mentoring Award to recognize a man or woman who demonstrates extraordinary mentoring skills in supporting the career of a female urologist. The award is given in memory of Christina Manthos, MD, a young urologist whose life and career were cut short by breast cancer.
“Dr. Mueller has served as a skilled mentor to several of our next generation of female urologists,” said Linda Brubaker, MD, MS, dean, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. “The guidance she has provided to these young physicians makes her well deserving of this prestigious honor.”
Dr. Mueller will receive the award on Monday, May 19, at the SWIU Networking Reception during the upcoming American Urological Association’s Annual Meeting in Orlando, Fla.
“Dr. Mueller has set an excellent example for many up and coming female urologists,” said Robert Flanigan, MD, professor and chair, Department of Urology, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, and past recipient of the Christina Manthos Mentoring Award. “Her skills as a clinician, researcher and educator have been invaluable to those who have had the privilege of working with her.”
Dr. Mueller began her career as a registered nurse working in an intensive care unit setting. She worked as a nurse while she obtained a bachelors and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and then went to work for a manufacturing business for 6 years until deciding to go to medical school. She came to Loyola and completed the urology residency program. Dr. Mueller has since become one of the nation’s leading doctors in pelvic floor disorders. She completed her fellowship under world-renowned urogynecologist Linda Brubaker, MD, and has in turn mentored countless physicians who have gone on to work at some of the nation’s most prestigious institutions in the country.
The Society of Women in Urology (SWIU) began at the 1980 American Urological Association Meeting when five female urologists met to discuss their experiences. SWIU now has more than 650 members, including more than 250 board-certified female urologists, as well as female urology residents, fellows, post-residency and pre-board-certified women. SWIU also has female members who are non-urology MDs and PhDs.
