Newswise — The University of California, San Diego has again been recognized as a global leader in academic excellence––the university was most recently ranked the 40th best university in the world, according to Times Higher Education. The London-based higher education magazine partnered with Thomson Reuters for the “World Universities Rankings 2013-2014,” which recognized UC San Diego as a leading research university, with teaching of the highest caliber and a strong international outlook.

“It is an honor to be recognized as a preeminent university with a global impact,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “Since the university’s founding over 50 years ago, it has emerged as a premier teaching institution, an economic engine and a research powerhouse with a strong commitment to public service.”

The Times Higher Education rankings measure university’s research budgets and impact, faculty publications and the diversity of the student population, among other factors. UC San Diego recently earned nearly $1 billion in research and development funding, facilitating inspirational research programs across a multitude of disciplines.

Times Higher Education ranked universities in five broad performance categories:

  • Teaching—the learning environment
  • Research—volume, income and reputation
  • Citations—research influence
  • Industry income—innovation
  • International outlook—staff, students and research

Throughout 2013, UC San Diego consistently earned prestigious international academic rankings. UC San Diego was named the 14th best university in the world, according to the 2013 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The campus also was recognized as the 15th best university in the globe by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) of Leiden University in the Netherlands, and it was ranked 20th best by the Center for the World University Rankings (CWUR).
