Newswise — Seventeen years after Viagra debuted, the first FDA-approved drug for treating sexual dysfunction in women became available Oct. 17.

Ildiko Kovacs, MD, is a psychiatrist at UC San Diego Health with expertise in treating women and couples with issues related to sexual function and sexuality. She is certified to prescribe the drug, flibanserin (marketed as Addyi), and is available to discuss what women can expect from the medication, non-pharmacological approaches to treating hypoactive sexual desire disorder and the drug’s “boxed warning” about side effects. She can also speak to the controversy surrounding the drug’s approval and explain why only physicians with special certification can prescribe it.
