Newswise — WHAT:  The University of California San Diego, one of the top 15 research universities in the world and recognized for its contributions to the public good, will host His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama for a June 16 public address and June 17 keynote commencement address. The events are organized in partnership between UC San Diego and the Friends of the Dalai Lama Foundation.

WHEN:  Media are invited to cover the following events:

  • Friday, June 16, 2017, 9:10-9:40 a.m.: Press Conference UC San Diego RIMAC Activity Room, 3rd Floor.
    • His Holiness will be introduced by Ann Curry, an American television journalist who once anchored Dateline NBC and co-anchored NBC’s Today program.
  • Friday, June 16, 2017, 10-11:30 a.m.: “Embracing the Beauty of Diversity in Our World.” The address, open to the public, will take place on RIMAC Field at UC San Diego.
    • Those present on the stage will include UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, and journalist Ann Curry.
  • Saturday, June 17, 2017, 8-10:30 a.m.: “The Value of Education, Ethics and Compassion for the Well-Being of Self and Others.” The UC San Diego All Campus Commencement will be on RIMAC Field at UC San Diego.
    • Those present on the stage will include UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla, journalist Ann Curry, UC San Diego Vice Chancellors and Deans

***Please note that ONLY broadcast vehicles will be permitted on the field and must be in place on field by 5 a.m. each day.  Please load all cameras, lights and technical equipment in vehicle so it is in place for security sweep. No personal or station vehicles other that broadcast vehicles will be permitted on the field for any reason.

Important note: Parking passes will be required for all vehicles entering the campus and trucks parked on the field. Passes will be provided by the UC San Diego University Communications upon media registration for the event.

The press entrance can be found on the southwest corner of RIMAC Arena, on Ridgewalk.

Risers and audio:

On site audio feeds will be available (Line Level and Mic Level XLR)  on the three event press risers. (Limited power will be available.) Feed available for recording.

The center press riser (available on June 16 only) is 95 – 110’ from riser to lectern, and the side cutaway risers (available on June 16 and 17) will be 200’ – 225’ from riser to the lectern on the main stage.  Please plan camera lensing in advance, as we expect that each of the three risers will fill quickly.

It is expected that once His Holiness begins his address that all media will be limited in their ability to move from riser to riser.

VIDEO:  An HDSDI video program feed with embedded audio will be available in the press center to ensure all media outlets have access to a high quality program feed.
