Newswise — New Brunswick, NJ – The Rutgers School of Public Health is excited to announce that Vivian (Wei) Li, PhD, will be joining the department of biostatistics and epidemiology as an assistant professor in August.
Li’s research aims to uncover hidden information in large-scale genomic data, with a major focus on statistical genomics. In particular, her career emphasizes developing practical statistical methodology that can be applied to a variety of public health challenges.
Currently, she is modeling both tissue-level and single-cell genomic data and investigating various applications in practical biological and biomedical questions.
Li is also interested in comparative analysis, based on genomic or epigenomic profiles from multiple tissues or cell types.
“We are incredibly proud to welcome Dr. Li to the School of Public Health,” said Perry N. Halkitis, PhD, MS, MPH, dean of the Rutgers School of Public Health. “Dr. Li is a rigorous statistician who focuses on methodology, but most importantly, the interpretability and efficiency of models and algorithms so that they can be applied to health-related issues in populations. Her expertise in statistical genomics aligns with a growing domain of excellence at our School and Rutgers Biomedical Health Sciences.”
“The department of biostatistics and epidemiology is fortunate to be gaining someone with Dr. Li’s expertise,” said Jason Roy, PhD, chair of the department. “Her work on large-scale data and statistical genomics are applicable to a wide range of public health problems. She will be an invaluable resource for our students, department, and School.”

Li joins the Rutgers School of Public Health from the University of California, Los Angeles, where she completed her PhD in the department of statistics. Prior to earning her PhD, Dr. Li received a BS in Statistics from Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
