Newswise — Weight loss is especially important for overweight individuals with spinal cord impairments (SCI). UAB has developed a weight management program for this population, which often has limited physical abilities and unique nutritional needs, said Yuying Chen, M.D., Ph.D., of the Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. "For example, low-carb/high-protein diets can cause kidney problems, and improper exercise techniques can create chronic pain," he said. The SCI program was modified from UAB's EatRight Weight Management Program, which was designed for the general population, and underwent a four-year study that showed it to be safe and effective in reducing medical risks and improving quality of life. The unique, home-based program utilizes 12 weekly video and workbook lessons. Go to http://www.spinalcord.uab.edu and click on "What's New?" for ordering information.
