"Certification is a voluntary demonstration of competency," notes B. Eliot Cole, MD, MPA, CPE, Executive Director of the American Society of Pain Educators. "It signals an individual's commitment to continued practice in the field, professional growth, and self-improvement." The establishment of a certification program for pain educators "raises the bar, for both the profession and its practitioners, with patients envisioned as the ultimate beneficiaries," according to Dr. Cole.

Those who have achieved certification are ASPE members who have been able to document current licensure as a healthcare professional; clinical/professional experience in providing pain-related education to clinical peers and/or patients; and completion of pain-related continued education activities certified for Category 1 CME, CPE, CE, or other professional credit. Applicants then sit for a3-hour, 120-question examination that covers 4 major areas: Fundamentals of Instruction/Pedagogy, Science of Pain, Clinical Application, and Ethical/Legal Implications. Those who pass are awarded the credential.

Who is a pain educator? A pain educator is a healthcare professional who provides education about pain assessment, evaluation, and management to other healthcare professionals or directly to patients and their families/caregivers. Physicians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals serve in this role and can be found in medical and dental practices, hospitals, freestanding surgical centers, rehabilitation services, hospice and palliative-care facilities, nursing homes, physical- and occupational- therapy practices, and other healthcare settings.

The CPE Examination is given twice a year. The next testing period is August 1, 2009 to September 30, 2009, with applications being accepted now through September 16, 2009.
