Newswise — CHICAGO – Registered dietitian Alison L. Steiber has been named chief science officer at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association). Steiber comes to the Academy from Case Western Reserve University, where she was an associate professor and director of the coordinated dietetic internship and master’s degree program.

A specialist in kidney disease nutrition and treatment, Steiber will begin her position at the Academy July 2.

Steiber will direct Academy research projects and new strategic business development initiatives, including outcomes research for the nutrition and dietetics profession; research to support the Nutrition Care Process and International Dietetics Nutrition Terminology; and systematic reviews completed as part of the Academy’s Evidence Analysis Library. She will support activities of the Academy’s Research Committee and Dietetic Practice-Based Research Network Advisory Group and the Academy’s Board of Directors.

She will also represent the Academy at key scientific and policy conferences and advise Academy groups and teams on nutrition and dietetics research, methodology and statistical analysis.

Steiber has worked at Case Western since 2002, conducting research on nutritional assessment, quality of life, functional status, pancreatitis and probiotics. She is the author or co-author of dozens of scientific research papers as well as the chapter on “Nutrition Management of HIV/AIDS in Chronic Kidney Disease” in the Academy’s Clinical Guide to Nutrition Care in Kidney Disease (4th ed.). Steiber previously worked as a clinical dietitian and a dialysis center manager of nutrition services at facilities in Nebraska. She also speaks at international conferences on the Nutrition Care Process.

Steiber served on the Academy’s Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (now the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics) from 2009 to 2012. She is a past president of the Cleveland Dietetic Association and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Renal Nutrition.

Steiber is a graduate of Mankato State University and earned a master’s degree from the University of Kansas. She earned a doctorate in nutrition from Michigan State University.
