Newswise — CHICAGO – The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics will present its prestigious 2015 Medallion Awards to eight registered dietitian nutritionists in recognition of outstanding service and leadership in the Academy and the nutrition and dietetics profession.
Medallion Awards have been given to Academy members each year since 1976. The winners will receive their awards on Sunday, October 4, during the Academy’s Food & Nutrition Conference & ExpoTM, in Nashville, Tenn.
The 2015 Medallion Award recipients are:
• Susan T. Borra, RD, Arlington, Va. Borra is senior vice president for communications and strategic planning at the Food Marketing Institute, the nation’s largest food retail trade association. Previously, she was executive vice president and managing director of nutrition, food and wellness at Edelman Public Relations; executive vice president at the International Food Information Council; and president of the IFIC Foundation. She co-founded the Dietary Guidelines Alliance, a public private partnership of 17 national and government organizations that created the award winning nutrition education program “It’s All About You.” An Academy member since 1976, Borra served as the Academy’s 2001-2002 President. She represented Maryland in the Academy’s House of Delegates; was president of the Maryland Dietetic Association; a member and secretary/treasurer of the Academy’s Board of Directors; and chair of the Academy’s Foundation. The Foundation’s Susan T. Borra Nutrition Communication Fellowship was created by IFIC in her honor. Borra is a graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park.
• Sari F. Edelstein, PhD, RD, Boston, Mass. Edelstein is an associate professor of nutrition at Simmons College and director of the college’s five-year bachelor’s/master’s degree program. An Academy member since 1976, her career spans clinical and community dietetics, private practice, foodservice management and academia. Edelstein was the founder and the first chair of the Academy’s Jewish Member Interest Group and one of the founders and a past chair of the Academy’s Oncology Nutrition dietetic practice group. She served on the Ethics, Management and Practice Standards committees and is a member of the Academy’s Dietetic Practice Based Research Network. Edelstein has published dozens of scientific research articles and book chapters and is the author or editor of numerous books including Lifecycle Nutrition: An Evidence-Based Approach (2nd ed., Jones & Bartlett 2015) and Food Science: An Ecological Approach (Jones & Bartlett 2014). Edelstein is a graduate of Florida State University. She earned a master’s degree from Florida International University and a doctorate from the University of Florida.
• Jana R. Kicklighter, PhD, RDN, LD, FAND, Smyrna, Ga. Kicklighter is an associate professor emeritus at Georgia State University and a former chair of the department of nutrition and director of the graduate program in dietetics. An Academy member since 1975, Kicklighter served for a decade in the Academy’s House of Delegates and was a member of the Association Membership, Association Positions and Licensure Advisory committees. She is a past board member and vice chair of the Commission on Dietetic Registration, chairing the Competency Assurance Panel and serving on the Examination Panel. Kicklighter served on the Certification Collaboration Task Force; Code of Ethics Revision Task Force; and the Academy Foundation’s Scholarship Committee. She chaired the Academy’s Council on Future Practice and is a member of its Visioning Process Workgroup. She has published dozens of research articles and has received numerous awards for outstanding research, education and practice. Kicklighter is a graduate of Georgia Southern University. She earned a master’s degree in dietetics and a doctorate in educational leadership from Emory University.
• John A. Krakowski, MA, RDN, CDN, FAND, Flanders, N.Y. A specialist in hunger response, food advocacy, food safety, emergency preparedness and disaster relief, Krakowski is a public health sanitarian at the Suffolk County, N.Y., department of health services. Previously, he worked at City Harvest, in New York City, as director of food operations, director of policy and community affairs and director of policy and public information. Krakowski developed and led City Harvest’s disaster response following the attacks of September 11, 2001. He worked for nearly 20 years in foodservice administration in acute and long-term care settings. Within the Academy, Krakowski chaired the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee and the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition practice group; was a member of the Nominating Committee and the House of Delegates’ Emergency Preparedness Task Force; and is a past president of the New York Academy. Krakowski is a graduate of the State University of New York – Oneonta and earned a master’s degree from New York University.
• Ainsley M. Malone, MS, RDN, LD, CNSC, FAND, FASPEN, New Albany, Ohio. Malone is a clinical practice specialist at the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and a nutrition support dietitian at Mount Carmel West Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Previously, she was an adjunct instructor in critical care nutrition at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. An Academy member since 1980, Malone is a nationally recognized expert on malnutrition and specialized nutrition care for hospitalized patients. She is the co-editor of three Academy pocket guides – Enteral Nutrition, Parenteral Nutrition and Nutrition Assessment – and was the 2013-2014 president of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. Within the Academy, Malone is vice chair of the Association Positions Committee; a member and past chair of the Evidence Based Practice Committee; a past member of the House of Delegates; and chair of the Evidence Analysis Critical Illness Workgroup. Malone is a graduate of Miami University and earned a master’s degree from Finch University of Health Sciences (now Rosalind Franklin University).
• Judith C. Rodriguez, PhD, RDN, LDN, FADA, FAND, Jacksonville, Fla. Rodriguez is a professor and chair of the department of nutrition and dietetics at the University of North Florida, where she was named the university’s Distinguished Professor in 2013. She also directed the university’s undergraduate dietetics program, the master of science in health nutrition program and the dietetic internship. An Academy member since 1974, Rodriguez served as the Academy’s president in 2010-2011. She is the author of several books including 200 Surefire Ways to Eat Well and Feel Better (Fair Winds Press 2014). Rodriguez received the 2008 Women of Color Cultural Foundation Award (Education) and the 2003 Hispanics Achieving Community Excellence Award (Education). She was the chair of the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s Fellow Program Evaluation Task Force; a member of the Academy’s House of Delegates; and a member of the Academy’s Phase II Dietetics Practice and Education Task Force. Rodriguez is a graduate of New York University, where she also earned a master’s degree. She holds a doctorate in cultural anthropology from Rutgers University.
• Judith Wylie-Rosett, EdD, RD, New York City, N.Y. Wylie-Rosett is a professor and head of the division of behavioral and nutritional research in the department of epidemiology and population health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she also holds the Atran Foundation Chair in Social Medicine. An authority on diabetes care, education and research, Wylie-Rosett is a past chair of the Academy’s Diabetes Care and Education dietetic practice group and received the Academy’s outstanding achievement awards in both education and research. An Academy member since 1967, she is a member of the Journal of the Academy of Dietetics Board of Editors and has served on editorial boards of seven other journals. Wylie-Rosett is a leader in the American Heart Association, where she serves on the Nutrition Committee, and the American Diabetes Association, where she co-chaired the Nutrition Recommendations Committee and was a member of the board of directors. Wylie-Rosett is a graduate of the University of Arkansas. She earned a master’s degree and a doctorate from Columbia University.
• Martin M. Yadrick, MBI, MS, RDN, FAND, Kansas City, Mo. Yadrick is the director of nutrition informatics for Computrition Inc., an enterprise solution provider for foodservice management, patient care and retail technology, where he has worked since 1993. An Academy member since 1981, Yadrick served as the Academy’s president in 2008-2009. Previously, he chaired the Diversity Committee and served in the House of Delegates as a Professional Issues Delegate–Consultation and Business Practice. He is a member of the Academy’s Health Informatics Infrastructure Workgroup; a former Academy media spokesperson; past chair of the Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutrition dietetic practice group; past chair of the Academy’s political action committee; and a past board member of the California and Missouri dietetic associations. Yadrick received the California Dietetic Association’s 2006 Distinguished Service Award and SCAN’s 2004 Achievement Award. A graduate of Colorado State University, Yadrick earned a master’s degree from the University of Kansas, an MBA from the University of Missouri–Kansas City and a master’s degree in biomedical informatics from Oregon Health & Science University.
