Newswise — The ACLU’s James Esseks will deliver “Reflecting on LGBTQ Rights—Past, Present, and Future,” NYU’s Annual Irving H. Jurow Lecture, on Mon., April 8, 5:30 p.m., at NYU’s Hemmerdinger Hall, Silver Center for Arts and Science, 100 Washington Square East (enter at 32 Waverly Place or 31 Washington Place [wheelchair accessible]).
Esseks, director of the ACLU Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender & HIV Project, speaks nearly 50 years after the Stonewall rebellion of 1969 and will focus on how far the LGBTQ movement has come, what the current challenges are, and what the future likely holds.
Esseks oversees the ACLU’s nationwide program of litigation, legislative lobbying, policy advocacy, organizing, and public education, which seeks to ensure equality and justice for LGBT people and people living with HIV. The National LGBT Bar Association awarded Esseks the Dan Bradley Award in 2013, the organization’s highest honor, recognizing individuals whose work “has led the way in our struggle for equality under the law.”

The Annual Irving H. Jurow Lecture, presented by NYU’s College of Arts and Science in conjunction with the all-University initiative, NYU STONEWALL@50, which celebrates and commemorates the 1969 Stonewall riots.
