Newswise — (MOUNT LAUREL, NJ, October 13, 2019) — The American Neurological Association (ANA), the professional organization representing the nation’s top academic neurologists and neuroscientists, will launch its first podcast today during its 144th Annual Meeting in St. Louis.
The “ANA Investigates” podcast, focused on the research and professional interests of ANA members, will appeal to anyone interested in cutting-edge research into stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, movement disorders, sleep disorders, traumatic brain injury, and other neurologic diseases. The podcast will also explore the career paths of the ANA’s more distinguished members, as well as discussing topical issues in the field, making it an excellent professional tool for early-career physicians and researchers.
“ ‘ANA Investigates’ is by ANA members, for ANA members,” said Romer Geocadin, MD, Professor of Neurology, Anesthesiology-Critical Care Medicine, and Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Chair of the ANA Online Education Task Force. “Its content depends on the members and what they want to hear. So there will be multiple topics from cutting-edge science to the way we practice, packaged in ways that are relevant for our members.”
“This podcast is also being considered for publication in the journals of the ANA,” Geocadin added. “A summary of the podcast will be subject to peer review, which means that there will be a scientific rigor, which brings forth a different level of quality control.”
The 15- to 20-minute podcasts will be hosted by Adeline Goss, MD, a neurology resident at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center and former producer for National Public Radio. Interviewers will include members of the ANA Online Education Task Force, and guests will represent a cross section of ANA talent from across the country. Episodes are produced by Jen Hurley, CHCP, CPHQ, the ANA’s Accreditation and Education Manager, and will be available for download on Apple Podcasts, with ANA members able to earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ through the ANA’s OnDEC portal (myana.org/OnDEC).
“Assessing the credibility and validity of content in medical education podcasts is something that is sorely missing,” said James Siegler, MD, Assistant Professor of Neurology, Cooper Neurological Institute, Cooper University Hospital. “We stressed the importance early on of peer review of our content.” Siegler will host one of the podcast’s first episodes, on “Implicit Bias in the Workplace and Patient Care.”
“In the early episodes, we have chosen topics that are approachable to each of us as interviewers so that we could become more familiar with the format and process of producing a podcast,” said Megan Richie, MD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco.
“Going forward, we really want a lot of different input from stakeholders in terms of what to cover,” Richie said. “We’d like to consider guests who have a breadth and depth of experience in a novel or timely topic in neurology, be it clinical or basic science research, education, global health, or issues related to academic neurology from an institutional or quality improvement level. I think those broad categories are all applicable. It just needs to move the field forward from a place of expertise.”
