American Sociological Association Holds 2001 Annual Meeting

Washington, DC -- The American Sociological Association's (ASA) 96th Annual Meeting will convene August 18-21st at the Hilton Anaheim and the Anaheim Marriott in Anaheim, CA. More than 550 sessions will be held on a wide range of topics including social inequality, race and racism, work/labor markets, immigration, education, youth and families, health, political sociology, popular culture, and more. The theme of the Annual Meeting is "Cities of the Future."
In addressing the importance of this theme, ASA President Douglas Massey (University of Pennsylvania) said, "For the first time in human history, a majority of the world's people will be living in cities. The modes of social organization and settlement that have characterized human existence for millennia will gradually disappear over this century. We need to reflect on the meaning of urbanization for human societies and social relations; not just in wealthy and industrial nations, but in those that are rapidly industrializing as well as those lagging behind."
In addition to plenary, thematic, and special sessions, the 2001 Annual Meeting will feature presentations, book panels, poster sessions, symposia, and other events focused on a variety of research and policy-related issues. Special media briefings are also planned.
