Media Invited To ASA Annual Meeting
August 9-13, 1997
Toronto, Canada

Some 5,000 participants will convene in Toronto, August 9 - 13, 1997 for
the 92nd Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association.

With the theme "Bridges for Sociology: International and
Interdisciplinary," this year's Annual Meeting will bring scholars from
across many fields and countries to present new research findings and
provide fresh perspectives on issues ranging from immigration to
marriage and the family.

Journalists are encouraged to attend and link their interests with the
Meeting program's rich schedule of events. Opportunities include:

* Interviews with high-profile sociologists with newly published
research;

* Special press conferences on timely events;

* Hundreds of exciting sessions on such issues as AIDS/HIV (7 sessions),
alcohol and drugs (8), children and youth (11), criminal justice and
delinquency (17), immigration (19), marriage and the family (32), mass
communication and public opinion (14), mental health (14), poverty and
homelessness (12), race and minority relations (66), religion (13),
sexuality and homosexuality (13), sex and gender (70), violence (5),
work and labor markets (42);

* Newsworthy plenaries on NAFTA and the challenges of globalism;

* A unique special sequence of sessions on core issues affecting Canada
and U.S.-Canadian relations.

The Meeting will be held at Sheraton Centre, Toronto Marriott, Toronto
Hilton, and the Toronto Colony.

During the meeting, the media is urged to register at ASA's on-site
media office for registration packets, press conference information, and
interview assistance. The Media Office will be located in Conference
Room E at the Sheraton Centre. Hours will be 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday,
August 8; 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday-Tuesday, August 9-12; and, 8
a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14.

The deadline for requesting housing at the special convention rates is
July 10. Please use the enclosed ASA Convention Housing Reservation to
secure housing accommodations. Those faxing the enclosed Media Registry
Form by July 21 will be mailed a complimentary copy of the preliminary
program.
