Newswise — Officials from the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology are pleased to announce the results of the recent election for the open positions on the Board of Directors and within two councils.

"I am happy to introduce these distinguished individuals as part of ASTRO's leadership team," said ASTRO Chair Joel E. Tepper, M.D. "With the election of a new President-elect and two Council Vice-chairs, we are continuing to implement a new governance structure and these additions will undoubtedly make our organization stronger and help us accomplish our goals of improving cancer care through education and research." The new officers for 2004 include:

"¢ President-elect: K. Kian Ang, M.D., Ph.D., M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston.

Dr. Ang is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in addition to serving as a Professor of Radiation Oncology and the Gilbert H. Fletcher Memorial Chair in Radiation Oncology at the center. He has been actively involved in ASTRO as Treasurer, Chair of the International Relations Committee and a member of the Scientific Program Committee.

"¢ Government Relations Council Vice-chair: Albert L. Blumberg, M.D., Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Baltimore.

Dr. Blumberg is a radiation oncologist at several hospitals in Maryland, including Greater Baltimore Medical Center, St. Joseph's Medical Center and St. Agnes Healthcare. He has been an active member of ASTRO, serving on the Joint Economics Committee since 1998 and as Co-chair of the Government Relations Committee since 2002.

"¢ Education Council Vice-chair: Anthony L. Zietman, M.D., Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.

Dr. Zietman is a member of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and is a Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Harvard Medical School. He has been Chair of the Scientific Program Committee of ASTRO, a reviewer of scientific abstracts and a faculty member at the ASTRO Annual Meeting.

These new officers will begin their terms during ASTRO's 46th Annual Meeting in Atlanta to be held October 3-7, 2004.
