Babson School of Executive Education Update: February 1998

This monthly update is designed to keep you informed about activities at the Babson School of Executive Education, which provides management development programs to companies around the world. In the month of January, Babson faculty delivered customized executive programs to Colonia Insurance, Dunkin' Donuts, LIMRA, Olsten Health Services, PetrÛleos de Venezuela, and Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme. Details follow.

Dunkin' Donuts: No Holes in These Business Plans! During the last module of Allied Domecq's Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin Robbins Retail Innovation program participants developed business plan presentations with their franchisees, then presented them to a panel of experts, including Dunkin' Donuts executives and Babson faculty members Jeffery Ellis, Steve Spinelli and Kathleen Seiders. Following presentations, participants turned their attention to techniques for managing growth and building relationships in a growing business environment.

Babson/Olsten Management Institute Ensures a Healthy Future Olsten Health Services and the Babson School of Executive Education launched the Babson/Olsten Management Institute to unite and educate Olsten's business unit managers and ensure continued success in the marketplace. The Institute helps individual business units located across the U.S. share knowledge. The pilot program was led by Professor Mort Galper along with Professors Anne Donnellon and Kathleen Hevert. Session topics included implementing strategy, market assessment, performance analysis, and financial tools for decision-making. Participants had an opportunity to work on individual action plans throughout the five-day program. This was balanced by group assignments concentrated on responding to competitors. The next offering is scheduled for April.

PetrÛleos de Venezuela Increases Its Commitment to Corporate Entrepreneurship In partnership with the Babson School of Executive Education, PetrÛleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) launched a new offering to supplement its existing management development initiatives focused on corporate entrepreneurship. Identifying and Developing Internal Opportunities program, held in January in Caracas, was led by Professor Bill Lawler. It will serve as a precursor to the Babson/PDVSA Entrepreneurial Management Program. The pairing of programs is intended to complement PDVSA's efforts to prosper in a changing business climate. Identifying and Developing Internal Opportunities imparted general management principles to thirty of PDVSA's mid-level managers. The next offering is scheduled for March.

LIMRA Members Rise to the Market Challenge Thirty senior-level insurance executives graduated last month from The LIMRA Leadership Challenge, the final module of the Strategies for Executive Advancement program. The program, led by Robert Allio, focused on enhancing leadership skills as tools for meeting market challenges and industry changes. Program topics included: vision, managing change, and negotiation. Professor Albert Anderson led sessions on analyzing values, business conduct, legality, and morality. Upon completion of this module LIMRA members are awarded the LIMRA Leadership Institute Fellow (L.L.I.F.) designation.

Siemens Nixdorf Operationalizes Plans in Singapore Last month in Singapore, Professor Phil Dover helped 21 managers in the Open Enterprise Computing Group of Siemens Nixdorf understand the tools required to create strong regional plans, including coherent and actionable business plans for countries in the Far East region. The program evolved from the Designing Competitive Strategic Plans seminar delivered in 1997 in which participants were charged with developing a business plan for either a core product or an emerging technology. A program for the European region will be held in March.

Babson/Colonia Program Continues in Germany Colonia is the largest insurance company in Germany and part of AXA, a large French insurance firm. Professors Larry Carr and Neal Thornberry led a program focused on developing a new culture of entrepreneurial thinking within the company, an initiative brought on by intense competitive pressure resulting from deregulation in Europe's insurance industry. Approximately 30 mid- to senior-level managers attended the program. The next program will be held in March.
