Newswise — A team of MBA students from the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College won the ACG CUP (Association for Corporate Growth, Inc.), a regional Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) case competition. The Babson team -- Joe Faskha, Dan Gay, Sam Vaill, Annabelle Desangles, Tip Olcott -- won the ACG Cup and cash prize competing against Boston College Carroll School of Management, Boston University School of Management, and MIT Sloan School of Management. In addition they gain valuable access to a network of investment banking and finance contacts. The Babson team will be honored at an ACG meeting in April and will receive national publicity through ACG and co-sponsor Harris-Williams, a large middle-market investment banking firm. The Association for Corporate Growth is the most significant professional network within the finance and banking, and mergers and acquisitions industries. The ACG CUP is a case study competition designed to give students from leading MBA programs real world experience and invaluable insights into mergers and acquisitions, investment banking, financial advisory and private equity. Each case study provides students with a unique opportunity to present valuation, capital markets and M&A strategic advice to a panel of seasoned M&A professionals from within the ACG community. The competition is carried out through a series of intra-school and regional competitions, with regional winners awarded the ACG Cup title and cash awards. ACG Boston brought this national event to Boston area business schools for the first time this year. The competition, which began in Los Angeles, is now held at over 50 business schools in thirteen regions throughout the nation. Teams of 3-5 students are given a 15-20 page case study one week prior to the competition. They must then analyze and provide strategy recommendations based on the business issue presented in the case study. The regional championship in the Boston area was held at MIT. Another deal scenario was given to the four business school teams one week in advance and each team presented to a 'board' of senior private equity partners and investment banking professionals who grilled the teams. "For its first time in the competition, Babson had eight teams enter, holding its own runoff round here on February 12th. The teams were given a merger & acquisition case written for the competition by an investment banking firm and were judged by a panel of senior partners from private equity and investment banking firms," according to Babson entrepreneurship lecturer, M&A expert, and team coach Kevin Mulvaney. "I can tell you that the judges were blown away by the quality and professionalism of the teams competing. Our students are trained at the highest level for jobs in the M&A field and that evening proved it," continued Mulvaney.
