Newswise — Babson College Associate Professor of Finance Michael Goldstein has been elected chair of NASDAQ's Economic Advisory Board for 2005.

The primary function of the Economic Advisory Board (EAB) is to provide advice and guidance to the Board of Directors of NASDAQ on issues relating to market structure. Their goals are to bring academic thought to bear on NASDAQ policy and initiatives, and to keep influential academic thinkers well informed.

Goldstein holds the Joseph Winn Term Chair at Babson. His research covers market microstructure, privatization of formerly communist countries, and real estate. His publications include "Trading Strategies during Circuit Breakers and Extreme Market Movements," (with Ken Kavajecz), Journal of Financial Markets, 2004; "Eighths, Sixteenths, and Market Depth: Changes in Tick Size and Liquidity Provision on the NYSE" (with K. Kavajecz), 2000; "Market Making and Trading in NASDAQ Stocks" (with E. Nelling), 1999; "REIT Return Behavior In Advancing and Declining Stock Markets" (with E. Nelling), Real Estate Finance, 1999; "Privatization in Post-Communist Economies" (with B. Gultekin), in Financial Sector Reform and Privatization in Transition Economies, John Doukas, Victor Murinde and Clas Wihlborg (editors), and Advances in Finance, Investment and Banking; and others.

Prior to Babson, Goldstein was on the faculty of the University of Colorado at Boulder, and was an investment banker with Merrill Lynch & Co. From 1997 to 1998 he was the Visiting Economist at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the eighth academic to hold this post. He also served as advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister of Poland. He has made numerous presentations at research-related conferences.

Goldstein received a BS, MBA, MA, and a PhD, all in Finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He was raised in Newton (MA) and is a product of their public school system.
