Fashion Trends for Fall/Winter 2011

For men:

The military look has been popular for a few seasons and will continue to gain popularity through this fall and winter. Whether you are looking to pick up some new pieces or unearth some great vintage deals, look for the following items to create a strong military look:• Combat boots• Bomber jackets and military-style coats• Shoulder embellishments• Metal appliqués such as buttons, zippers, chains

If military is not your style, embrace the fall 2011 trends by incorporating some of the following pieces into your wardrobe. • Bigger suits (Look for slimmer pants with a broader jacket)• Canvas bags • Anything but blue denim – white, green and even red jeans. .• Mismatching – mix colours and patterns together for an eclectic and current look.• Coloured shoes – for a casual look try a coloured canvas sneaker. Darkly hued leather dress shoes in shades of deep green and blue are great for a more formal look.• A standout colour this fall is orange.

For women:

The bold trend of colour blocking is re-interpreted this fall by pairing bright colours with calmer neutrals. Try out colour blocking using the following tips:•Get a statement coat - a coat in a bold, fun colour such a red or orange is a great way to go. Pair your eye-catching coat with a neutral bottom to make the look more current for fall.• For a reversed look, try a neutral coat paired with a bold coloured bottom.• A key neutral for fall and winter 2011 is winter white.

Other major women’s trends:• Lace • Maxi dresses and maxi skirts• Bold prints, try florals and polka dots• ‘60s revival – look for vintage pieces as well as modern accessories and pieces that echo a vintage style.

Finding Your Vintage Style:

For both men and women, vintage is on trend for fall 2011 and an affordable way to amp up your look on a student budget.

Key Vintage finds:• Jeans – you can cuff them, roll them and hem them to suit your style. • Retro jewelry in gold, brass and silver• Shoes! People often forget that there are great deals to be found in quality leather shoes and boots at your local thrift store.

Styled by members of the Ryerson Fashion Union, these three fall looks make the most of vintage pieces. Left: A $5 pair of thrift store jean shorts are cuffed and paired with a $10 vintage top for a casual fall look. Middle: The model is wearing both a vintage shirt and skirt, paired with modern shoes. The shirt is knotted to create a defined waist. Right: A cotton maxi skirt purchased for four dollars is turned into a dress with a braided belt cinched at the waist, on right.

Vintage shopping tips: • Have patience - sifting through racks of clothing is a must.• Don’t aim for entire outfits - look for pieces that will work with what you have.• Take risks on items that catch your eye, keep in mind that they can be paired with basics.• Trust your instincts! If it doesn’t suit your style or shape, don’t buy it.• Shop around – your local thrift store is a great place to start, but don’t forget the specialty vintage stores that do much of the hunting for you at a slightly higher cost.
