Newswise — Preparing for the first year at college can seem overwhelming, but the transition can be a smooth one if you take the time to complete a few simple tasks during the summer months.

“There are plenty of things new students can do to get ready for their first year away from home,” says Katie Russell, assistant director of the Center for Orientation, Mentoring, Parents, and Academic Student Success (COMPASS) at Michigan Technological University. “Make sure you learn as much as you can in advance by taking advantage of all of the school’s available resources.”

To ease the move from high school home-dweller to independent college student, Russell offers these tips:

• Check to see if your school provides a list of items they recommend packing for life in the residence halls. “You don’t want to over-pack, but you certainly don’t want to forget important items,” says Russell.

• Research campus resources before arriving at school. If you make sure you’re familiar with the academic and social opportunities available, you can take advantage of many of them right away.

• Find out about student healthcare options. If your school offers a student health insurance plan, see if it is right for you.

• See if your local bank has a branch close to campus. If not, you might need to open an account at a new bank and transfer funds before leaving for school.

• Make sure your current cell phone service is available at your new school. If you need to switch providers, check first with other students to find out which company provides the best service and deals for the area.
