Newswise — Chicago (March 29, 2016): The Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) awarded Benyam Muluneh, PharmD BCOP CPP, the 2016 Patient Advocacy Award at the 12th HOPA Annual Conference on March 17 in Atlanta. This prestigious award, supported by Teva Oncology, recognizes a HOPA member who demonstrates leadership and collaboration while advocating for outstanding patient care.
Dr. Muluneh is an oncology clinical pharmacist practitioner at University of North Carolina Medical Center in the Malignant Hematology Clinic. He also holds an adjunctive assistant professor appointment at UNC’s Eshelman School of Pharmacy.
Dr. Muluneh was nominated by a colleague, “For teaching that we must always be the greatest advocates for our patients in all that we do, and for modeling the way in commitment and passion.”
His research and clinical focus is surrounding better defining and advancing the role of the pharmacist in managing oral chemotherapy and improving supportive care strategies in patients with malignant hematology. Benyam is currently representing the pharmacy profession working with a consortium of patient care advocates to get a bill passed for Oral Chemotherapy Parity in North Carolina. Additionally, he had the privilege of participating in the 2015 Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Man of the Year campaign raising over $60,000 for blood cancer research and patient assistance.
He received his doctor of pharmacy degree from UNC’s Eshelman School of Pharmacy. He completed his pharmacy practice and oncology specialty residencies at UNC Medical Center.
HOPA
HOPA is a nonprofit professional organization formed in 2004 to help oncology and hematology pharmacy practitioners and their associates provide the best possible cancer care. HOPA supports research, conducts educational conferences to advance knowledge, encourages professional development and advocates for health policy issues that improve patient care. HOPA has more than 2,500 members and includes oncology pharmacists, as well as pharmacy administrators, researchers, residents, interns and technicians specializing in hematology/oncology practice.
