BIELBY ELECTED 94th PRESIDENT OF AMERICAN SOCIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- William T. Bielby, University of California, Santa Barbara, was elected the 94th President of the American Sociological Association, and Ivan Szelenyi, Yale University, was elected Vice President. Bielby and Szelenyi will assume office in August of 2002, following a year of service as President-elect and Vice President-elect.

Election to President is the highest honor ASA members can bestow on a colleague. As President, Bielby serves as Chair of the ASA Council, which governs the Association and its policies. He also chairs the Program Committee for the 2003 Annual Meeting to be held in Atlanta, GA on Aug. 16-19, 2003.

In announcing the results of the election, Secretary Florence B. Bonner and Executive Officer Felice J. Levine extended heartiest congratulations to the newly elected officers and committee members. The other elected officials include the four newly elected Council Members-at-Large, the two members elected to the Committee on Publications, and the six members elected to the Committee on Nominations. The newly elected officers and their positions are:
