BATON ROUGE -- George Herbert Walker Bush, the 41st president of the United States and father of the current president, will give the commencement address at LSU's 244th spring commencement ceremonies May 18.

Bush has a bit of history with LSU. He was the keynote speaker at the LSU War Memorial dedication ceremonies in 1998, and his wife, Barbara, delivered the commencement address when she was First Lady in 1992. She was also presented with an honorary doctor of humane letters degree at that time.

Bush was born in Milton, Mass., on June 12, 1924. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to1945 and rose to the rank of lieutenant, junior grade. While flying for the Navy he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals.

After his military service he returned to college and received a B.A. degree from Yale University in 1948. He worked in the oil business for 18 years before winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1966.

Bush also served as ambassador to the United Nations, chair of the Republican National Committee, U.S. liaison officer to the People's Republic of China, director of the Central Intelligence Agency and vice president of the United States. He was elected president in 1988.
