Newswise — China ending its one-child policy will not result in a baby boom, as predicted in some reports, says Texas A&M University Professor of Sociology Dudley Poston, a demographer who specializes in Asian populations. “I don’t believe this baby boom will happen mainly because of the ‘low fertility trap’ i.e., it is really difficult to increase the fertility rate after it has fallen as low as it has in China,” Poston asserts. “The government of China states the fertility rate is around 1.7; but demographers in-the-know in China place it at around 1.4. There will not be a baby boom in China in the next few years or decade.” To interview Professor Poston, contact Lane Stephenson at [email protected].
