The American Sociological Association Releases Contexts, an Accessible Social Science Magazine

Today the American Sociological Association (ASA) released Contexts--its newest entry into the publishing world. Edited by Claude Fischer, University of California, Berkeley, Contexts aims to make sociological work accessible to a broad audience irrespective of their interests or expertise.

More than reporting on recent sociological findings, Contexts seeks to stimulate researchers to ask new questions and seek new connections in their work and to debunk myths or commonplace assumptions. This magazine is a "must read" for sociologists, social scientists and other audiences interested in the latest sociological research. Published on behalf of the ASA by the University of California Press, Contexts is designed with the touch and feel of a magazine.

In the "Letter from the Editor" Fischer says, "Contexts brings the best of sociological research to the general public in a concise, accessible and engaging way." He says that Contexts will be the bridge that makes the findings of social science available to the general public.

Contexts, a quarterly publication, contains quick descriptions of sociological research, feature articles on current topics, photo essays and collections, book reviews and personal essays. The inaugural issue includes articles on English-only education, gender politics in teen dating, the crime decline in context and the implication of welfare reform. Also included is a personal essay by Kenneth Prewitt, former Director of the U.S. Bureau of the Census.

In a little more than two years, the journal moved from a concept in principle to a product in the concrete. Further information on Contexts can be found on its own homepage at www.contextsmagazine.org. The website includes searchable abstracts, a preview of current articles, timely press releases and subscription information.

The cost for a quarterly subscription to Contexts is $40 for individuals and $120 for institutions. The newsstand cost is $10 per issue. Media interested in a copy should contact Johanna Ebner in the ASA Public Information Office at (202) 383-9005 x320 or e-mail [email protected].
