Newswise — The fall semester is about to begin, meaning college students across the country will soon be opening new textbooks … and, in many cases, new credit card accounts.

Experts with Texas Tech University’s Red to Black credit counseling program can provide tips to help college students keep their checkbooks balanced while avoiding credit card debt.

Administered through Texas Tech's Personal Financial Planning Division, Red to Black provides free counseling for university students on issues like establishing credit, creating a budget, saving money, investing, repaying debt and organizing finances.

The New York Times has referred to Texas Tech as “arguably one of the best Personal Financial Planning programs in the country.”

Dottie Durband is the director of Red to Black.

John Salter is the director of Texas Tech’s Personal Financial Planning Division.

Bill Gustafson is an associate professor of Personal Financial Planning and former director.
