Philadelphia, PA, November 27, 2001 -- Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) today announced that its new journal, Current Opinion in Allergy and Clinical Immunology, has been accepted for inclusion in Index Medicus/MEDLINE on its first submission.

Current Opinion in Allergy and Clinical Immunology, part of the long-standing and well-received Current Opinion journal series, launched in February 2001. The bimonthly journal provides practicing allergists and immunologists with concise, authoritative reviews in key topic areas, including asthma in adults and children; primary immune deficiency diseases; drug, insect, and food allergies; genetics and epidemiology; occupational disease; immunotherapy; skin and eye diseases; and more. Reviews include commentaries to place the latest research information in a practical perspective, annotated references to help physicians focus on the latest studies of interest to them, and editorial opinions from leading experts. Section topics are presented in the same order each year

The National Library of Medicine's Index Medicus and its online counterpart, MEDLINE, are used internationally to provide access to the world's biomedical journal literature. Journals are selected for inclusion in Index Medicus/MEDLINE by the Literature Selection Technical Review Committee (LSTRC), a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-chartered advisory committee of external experts. The LSTRC accepts journals based on considerations of both scientific policy and scientific quality. Nearly 4,500 titles are currently included in the MEDLINE database, while more than 3,600 are in Index Medicus.

"Only about 25% of the approximately 420 titles reviewed each year meet or exceed the Committee's standards and are selected for indexing," said Elizabeth Ferguson, the journal's Publisher. "Current Opinion in Allergy and Clinical Immunology's selection on its first submission is indicative of the quality of the journal's content and editorial board."

Current Opinion in Allergy and Clinical Immunology is edited Drs. Mark Ballow and G. Walter Canonica. The journal's esteemed Editorial Board includes 26 members representing 14 countries.

About the Current Opinion SeriesThe Current Opinion journals were developed out of the recognition that it is increasingly difficult for specialists to keep up to date with the expanding volume of information published in their disciplines. They aim to help the reader by systemically providing the views of experts on current advances in their specialties in a clear and readable form, selections annotated by experts of the most interesting papers from the great wealth of original publications, and comprehensive bibliographic listings from several hundred journals (available separately).
