Newswise — Dr. Nancy L. Snyderman, FACS, chief medical editor of NBC News, will deliver the keynote address to the graduating physicians of the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, during the school's Convocation Ceremony on Monday, May 18, at 7 p.m. at the State Theatre in New Brunswick.

At Convocation, faculty members will recognize and celebrate the Class of 2009 by investing each student with an academic hood, which indicates the successful achievement of a medical degree. Also during the ceremony, four faculty members will be recognized for their achievements in teaching and research. Nancy L. Hayes, PhD, associate professor, Department of Neurosciences and Cell Biology and Sundip N. Patel, assistant professor, Department of Emergency Medicine will be presented with the Excellence in Teaching award. Masayori Inouye, PhD, distinguished professor, Department of Biochemistry and Michael Lewis, PhD, distinguished professor, Departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatry will be presented with the Excellence in Research award.

Along with being a best-selling author and network journalist, Snyderman is a head and neck cancer surgeon and an associate clinical professor at the University of Pennsylvania. She is co-founder of Lluminari, the parent company of BeWell.com, the first social network that connects members with credible content and dialogue from leading experts. Previously, she was vice president of Consumer Education at Johnson & Johnson. Prior to that, she served as medical correspondent for ABC News and was a contributor to 20/20, Prime Time Thursday and Good Morning America.
