EDUCATION TIPS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA AT BIRMINGHAM OFFICE OF MEDIA RELATIONS

1. Boot Camp for Budding Teachers School districts across the country are struggling to recruit qualified math and science teachers. "Recruitment is difficult because the best math and science students often opt for high-paying medical or technical careers," says UAB science education professor Lee Meadows, Ph.D. To fill the gap in Alabama, the UAB School of Education and local school districts created an alternative certification program, a teacher "boot camp," beginning July 26 for math and science professionals who want to become teachers. For two weeks, recruits will learn about lesson planning and classroom management before filling available teaching slots this Fall. On the job, participants will complete a two-year master's program in education and receive mentoring from experienced teachers. Call Gail Short, Media Relations, 934-8931.

2. Hey Kids, Let's Put on a Show! Looking for a way to keep the kids busy this summer? "Put on a play," says UAB Playwright-in-Residence Lee Shackleford. "Take them back to the old movie days when Mickey Rooney gathered all of his friends together and put on a show in the back yard. Helping kids create their own production fosters creativity and provides an opportunity for self-expression." Shackleford suggests parents look for ways to guide kids through the process, helping them with a script and materials, but leaving the imagination up to them. "Let them create costumes and backdrops from old clothes or take them to a thrift shop. The key is to have fun." Call Shackleford at 934-3236/[email protected].
