Eng Receives Fulbright Scholar Award Wellesley Resident Will Teach and Research in the People's Republic of China

Wellesley, Mass., USA--Robert J. Eng, associate professor of marketing at Babson College, was selected by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to receive a Fulbright Scholar award to the People's Republic of China during the 1997-98 academic year.

The Fulbright scholarship program was developed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchanges. Individuals are selected on the basis of academic or professional qualifications and potential, plus the ability and willingness to share ideas and experiences with people of diverse cultures.

Robert J. Eng is a teacher, author, entrepreneur, and international marketer with special interest in the People's Republic of China. Under the Fulbright award, he will travel to Beijing's Tsinghua University and Xiamen University in Xiamen, a lesser known but important Chinese port city and current focus of business investors from Taiwan and southeast Asia. His research will center on two emerging business issues for China: finding, attracting, and retaining qualified personnel; and examining the country's distribution and transportation networks.

At Babson, Eng researches and teaches about China's business environment and the marketing of high technology in that country. In the 1980s he wrote Doing Business in the People's Republic of China for Wang Laboratories Inc.

Eng's interest in China dates back to 1978 when he founded an international marketing firm called The China Trade Company. In 1982 he traveled to China to participate in a four-week seminar covering marketing, management of factories, employee motivation, and management policy and planning. The seminar was jointly sponsored by Babson College, the US China Institute for Science and Technology, and the China Enterprise Management Association.

Eng travels yearly to China to teach an international course for Babson MBA students: Greater China: New Commercial Realities. The program introduces students to the dynamic economic and commercial evolution of Greater China through seminars, plant visits, and briefings by government officials and executives on-site in Taipei, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai.

Eng is founder of several technology companies and is former president of Feedback Marketing Services, a manufacturer and marketer of proprietary hardware and software for research. He is co-author of Statistics: A Fresh Approach and Promotional Management.

Eng joined the faculty at Babson College in 1976. From 1990 to 1995 he chaired the marketing division and played a key role in the design of innovative new teaching initiatives. In 1993 he contributed to the radical revision of Babson's MBA curriculum with a focus on Entrepreneurial leadership in a Changing Global Environment. He holds a BS from Boston College; an MBA from Syracuse University; and a DBA from Indiana University.

Babson College was founded in 1919 by entrepreneur and financier Roger W. Babson. It grants BS and MBA degrees through its undergraduate program and the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business, and offers programs to experienced managers worldwide through the Babson School of Executive Education. Its degree programs are accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
