Newswise — Babson College economics and entrepreneurship professor Maria Minniti has been named an advisor for the United Nations' Development Program (UNDP) to work particularly on the Poverty Reduction Project.

UNDP world goals include halving the proportion of people living in extreme poverty by 2015. Developing countries are working on poverty eradication strategies based on local needs and priorities. Through the Poverty Reduction Project, it advocates for these nationally-owned solutions and helps to make them effective. It promotes the concept of human poverty as a complement to income poverty, emphasizing that equity, social inclusion, women's empowerment, and respect for human rights matter for poverty reduction.

Minniti has published numerous journal articles in entrepreneurship and economics, and her work has been presented at many national and international conferences, such as the American Economic Association Meeting, the Academy of Management Meeting, and the Global Entrepreneurship Research Conference. She is a lead researcher on the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Project and is a member of the Entrepreneurship Research Consortium. Minniti is currently writing a book on entrepreneurship and economic growth.

Following findings of the GEM report, Minniti has been consulted often by United Nations' officers. "GEM has become increasingly important in shaping the way policymakers around the world think about entrepreneurship and the possibilities for underdeveloped areas," says Minniti.
