Newswise — Jennifer McCoy, an expert on Venezuelan politics and former election monitor and conflict mediator in the country for 17 years, is available to speak about the nation’s upcoming legislative elections.

McCoy is the author of four books on the subject, the latest of which is International Mediation in Venezuela (with Francisco Diez, USIP press, 2011). She is currently director of the Global Studies Institute and Distinguished University Professor at Georgia State University, and former director of the Carter Center’s Americas Program

“The legislative elections present the prospect for the governing party to lose control of the legislature for the first time since 1999, and come amidst widespread dissatisfaction with the direction the country is going under President Nicolas Maduro, heir to Hugo Chávez’ Bolivarian Revolution. Yet an opposition victory will not necessarily mean immediate wholesale change, as the governing party continues to control all of the public institutions and enjoys a number of prerogatives to limit the powers of the legislature,” she said.
