FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY EXPERTS AVAILABLE TO ADDRESS AFTERMATH OF TERRORIST ATTACKS

ECONOMY

"We're in a recession now, and this is going to cause the recession to be deeper and longer," says E. Ray Canterbery, who explains that a shaky stock market, consumer confidence and an uncertain response to the attack will fuel the economic slowdown. Canterbery is the author of "Wall Street Capitalism," a book published last year.

TRAUMA

"As a nation, we're still in a state of shock and will be at least until we know how many were killed or injured,'' says Charles Figley, director of the Traumatology Institute. Figley, who has achieved international recognition for his work in the area of traumatology, says those who have survived a traumatic incident in the past and those who look to others for their protection -- the very young or very old -- may be more deeply affected.

TERRORISM

"The world changed yesterday, and we all need to adjust to it," says James Fendrich, a political sociologist who teaches courses about unconventional politics and extremist groups. Fendrich adds that U.S. intelligence should have been aware of the attack and we must find out where the breakdown in our national security occurred.

CIVIL ENGINEERING

"Even though the World Trade Center towers collapsed, they were able to survive for about an hour after the attacks because of the steel structure and fire protection coating. This was precious time that allowed many people to escape from the building," says Professor Jerry Wekezer. Despite the attacks, the high price of real estate will ensure that engineers will continue to build skyscrapers, he adds.
