Newswise — Three leading University of California, San Diego authorities on North Korea and Asia will participate in a panel discussion to consider the likely impact on the United States, and the world, of the recent North Korean nuclear weapons test. The event will be held on (Wednesday) Oct. 11, at 6 p.m., at the Weaver Center of the Institute of the Americas on the UCSD campus. The public is invited and press coverage is encouraged.

The participants, all scholars at the UCSD Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, are: Susan Shirk, Professor of Political Science and director of the UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation; Stephan Haggard, professor of Korea-Pacific studies and Tai Ming Cheung, research fellow and specialist on Northeast Asian and Chinese security issues.

The discussion will center on the challenge to the international community created by the test of a nuclear weapon and will focus on likely reaction from the major nations, particularly China, South Korea, Japan, Russia and the United States. The scholars will respond to questions from the audience and from the news media.
