Newswise — AMES, Iowa — With Valentine’s Day approaching, an expert on flirting is coming to Iowa State University to share how he came to define the “five flirting styles.”

Jeffrey Hall is an associate professor of communication studies at the University of Kansas. His expertise on relationships and social interaction stems from years of research into interpersonal and nonverbal communication.

His lecture at Iowa State, “The Science of Flirting,” begins at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in the Memorial Union Great Hall. This event is free and open to the public.

Hall will discuss the research and groundbreaking survey, the “Flirting Styles Inventory,” that led to his book, “The Five Flirting Styles.” The book helps readers identify their flirting style and learn how it plays into their romantic relationships. Understanding how you communicate romantic interest may help improve your chances in love, Hall says.

Hall has published his research in peer-reviewed journals on topics including humor in relationships, making and keeping friends, and social networking. He has been interviewed on National Public Radio and CNN, and in Cosmopolitan, Men’s Health, Time magazine and The Wall Street Journal.

He earned a Ph.D. in communication from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California.

This lecture is co-sponsored by the College of Human Sciences, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, communication studies program, communication studies club, English department, psychology department, sociology department and the Committee on Lectures, which is funded by Student Government.
