"Flow" Author to Address CC Class of 2002

COLORADO SPRINGS - Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (pronounced "ME-high CHICK-sent-me-high-ee"), renowned author, researcher, and professor, will speak during Colorado College's 2002 commencement ceremony.

His best-selling book, "Flow," explains his theory of flow, living through peak experiences and engaging in everyday life. His theory on flow - when the experience of learning is its own reward - has received attention from psychologists around the world. He has devoted his life's work to the study of what makes people truly happy, satisfied and fulfilled.

Csikszentmihalyi is a professor at the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University. He spent more than 20 at the University of Chicago where he was a professor of human development and chair of the psychology department. His recent engagements include the World Economic Forum (DAVDS); consulting with Nissan, USA and the J.Paul Getty Museum; and co-founder of the "Positive Psychology" movement in The American Psychological Association.

Csikszentmihalyi has written 185 journal articles and 14 books. His books "Flow" (1990) and "Finding Flow" (1997) have been translated into 15 languages. His books include "Beyond Boredom and Anxiety," "Flow: The psychology of optimal experience," "Being Adolescent, The Evolving Self," and "Creativity, Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention." He has also written short stories for the New Yorker, essays for the Atlantic Monthly, book reviews for The New York Times, and has translated fiction and poetry into English from Italian, French, and Hungarian.

After graduating and receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, he began his career as associate professor and chairman of the department of sociology and anthropology at Lake Forest College. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Maine, and also at universities in Finland, Brazil, Canada, and Italy. He currently serves on the Child Labor Advisory Committee of the United States Department of Labor and the Center for Giftedness of the federal Department of Education.

President Kathryn Mohrman, who will be stepping down from the college's presidency after a nine-year tenure, will give the keynote address at Baccalaureate ceremony on Sunday, May 19, at 3 p.m. in Shove Chapel. President Mohrman will also receive an honorary degree. Other honorary degree recipients include Csikszentmihalyi and Marilyn Moon, 1969 CC alumna and senior fellow in the Health Policy Center at the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C.

Recent CC commencement speakers have included Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar, U.S. Congresswoman Diana DeGette, U.S. Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson, and Nobel Peace Prize winner and former Costa Rican President Oscar Arias.

Colorado College's commencement is scheduled for Monday, May 20, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on campus.
