Newswise — Like swarming bees, groups of yellow-shirted volunteers help freshmen move into their residence hall rooms and go through Orientation at Michigan Technological University.

Begun in 2004, the Big Yellow Move-in tradition involves faculty, staff and students at every level—from President Glenn Mroz to last year's freshmen, now wise second-year students.

"We usually get around 70 faculty and staff and their spouses, 15 student organizations, and another 150 orientation team leaders and student residence life members," says Travis Pierce, director of housing and residence life. "The custodians and maintenance folks also work all weekend."

And it routinely shocks the freshmen's families when they pull curbside with all their students' worldly possessions, expecting to be lugging the boxes, futons, and electronics up and down residence hall stairs themselves. Instead, it's "Sit back and relax, Mom and Dad." The Tech folks will take it from there.
