Newswise — UTEP will host "Emerging Faces in Hispanic Advertising," a conference focusing on how top industry marketers are creating new and effective advertising and communication strategies to reach the Hispanic consumer.

The conference will be presented by the Department of Communication, in cooperation with its Sam Donaldson Center for Communication Studies, Oct. 25-28. Students, faculty and industry professionals are encouraged to register. The deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 18. Registration forms are available at http://www.hispanicadconference.com.

More than 20 of the country's top advertising executives in print, Web, radio and television are scheduled to participate in panel discussions and presentations on three key Hispanic groups: youths, voters and female consumers.

Keynote speakers for Thursday, Oct. 26 and Friday, Oct. 27 include:"¢ Shirin Hakimzadeh, research assistant for Pew Hispanic Center in Washington D.C. Prior to joining the Pew Hispanic Center, Hakimzadeh co-authored essays on the gendered effects of immigration policy on the wages of immigrants from Latin America. The Pew Hispanic Center is a Washington-based research and policy analysis organization with a mission to improve understanding of the U.S. Hispanic population and to chronicle Latinos' growing impact on the nation."¢ Marc Sternhagen, vice president of Media Services for Simmons Media Research Bureau in Albuquerque, NM. With 29 years of industry experience, Marc is a media specialist on advertising sales and marketing. He has worked on-site in over 100 U.S. markets. For the past 50 years, Simmons Media Research Bureau has chronicled the shopping and lifestyle attitudes of American consumers.

Attendees will have an opportunity to network during session breaks, luncheons and evening entertainment events. Students will also have a chance to have their portfolios and resumes reviewed by local agencies sponsored by the Advertising Federation of El Paso.

"¢ The U.S. Census Bureau reports 42.6 million Hispanics live in the United States"¢ Hispanic-media advertising spending in 2005 increased by 6.8 percent over 2004, representing $3.3 billion in total advertising media expenditures."¢ During the 2004 election year, Hispanics accounted for 6.6 percent of registered voters and 6 percent of the 126 million people who voted.
