Dr. Olds is board-certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases and has been recognized worldwide as an expert in the fields of international health, infectious disease and parasitology.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Olds served as professor and vice-chairman of the department of medicine at Case Western Reserve University and as physician-in-chief and chairman of the department of medicine at Metro-Health Medical Center in Cleveland. Previously, he spent seven years as director of the International Health Institute at Brown University in Providence, R.I., where he continues to serve as an adjunct professor of medicine.

For the past two decades, Dr. Olds' research has focused on the detection, prevention and treatment of schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease prevalent in many tropical areas. This infection affects over 200 million people worldwide, and is caused by worms that penetrate directly through human skin when exposed to snail-contaminated water. This parasitic disease causes significant liver and kidney damage in adults, and is responsible for growth stunting, anemia and other disabilities in children.

Dr. Olds is a member of over a dozen national professional honor and scientific societies. He has served as chairman of several World Health Organization working committees and as principal consultant for the U.S. Agency for International Development's schistosomiasis vaccine trials in Egypt.

He has published over a hundred original research papers and presented numerous scientific abstracts both here and abroad. Dr. Olds was born in Nebraska and graduated from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. He received his M.D. degree from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha-Medical Honor Society. He trained in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and completed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine at Case Western Reserve/University Hospital of Cleveland. He also was that institutes medical chief resident. Dr. Olds also has received awards for his outstanding teaching of both residents and medical students.
